What’s the deal with health anyways?

What’s this elusive word? It makes you go hmm….what exactly does health mean anyways?

Webster’s definition: the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit;especially : freedom from physical disease or pain

WHO definition: Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Bear with me here, this is not a post on semantics. 

In my practice as a Naturopathic Physician, I’m constantly seeking the place where “health” resides in a person. Is it a relative thing? Is the answer different for every person? Or is it some ideal state that one can strive for? Or maybe a bit of both?  The bottom line is we are born with predispositions, and we also have an ability to make choices. Choices on what we will put into our bodies, what kind of work place and home environment we spend time in, how much we move, how we manage the dailly and larger stresses in life and the kinds of people we spend time with. All these factors can influence how you feel and ultimately influence health.

At any given moment we can experience ourselves physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Whether you are aware of it or not, there is a lot going on in the body at any given moment. It’s a complex system! So, where does one begin to become more empowered in their own health? Well, a mentor of mine shared with me that often the body whispers when it’s trying to get your attention. Then after a while, it starts to speak more firmly- the signs to pay attention to are a bit louder. Eventually, the body yells, so to speak, and one can only pay attention to the body as it now becomes hard to ignore.

I am inspired to support women, families and children to feel optimal, so ultimately they can do all the activities that they want and be free to be who they truly are. As a Naturopathic doctor, I spend time analyzing what’s going on and how to effectively create health again. I’ve always been a super keener when it comes to learning, and that’s why with my training in Naturopathic medicine, Energy Medicine, Yoga, Pilates, Kinesiology, and much more (read my bio here: http://www.dralexinamehta.com/bio.php),  I offer my patients a comprehensive assessment and variety of options to shift gears and get healthier!  

So back to what it means to be healthy…is it really just an absence of symptoms…sometimes that’s what it is. And sometimes you are looking for a little more than that..or maybe a lot more…

Wherever you are is where you are- and that’s valid and true. Just know that you deserve to have health and that includes living a life full of joys and opportunities that are perfect for you.
