This is one of the most common reasons patients see me. Before I became a Naturopathic Doctor, I was teaching Pilates and Yoga, Fitness classes, and working as a Personal trainer. Many of my clients wanted to lose weight. Still, after all these years, this is still one of the top areas that many people struggle with. Each person has their reasons for weight loss, and what we do know is that most people could stand to be healthier.
From the kinds of foods we eat to the time we eat them, to how often we eat- there is a lot to consider with weight loss when it comes to food we consume. There is also the hormonal component and exercise. There is gut health and the mental-emotional part. So, just at first glance, there are several factors to consider and this might be part of the reason some people struggle without results.
Holistic healthcare focuses on treating the whole person, rather than just the symptoms or the disease. Naturopathic doctors use therapies to support the body’s innate healing abilities and restore balance. When it comes to stubborn weight loss, a comprehensive approach to address the root cause is needed.
Some reasons why a holistic approach can help:
1. Personal Approach: Unlike one-size-fits-all diets or exercise plans, naturopathic medicine takes into account your unique needs and circumstances. I develop a personalized plan that considers factors such as your age, medical history, stress levels, sleep habits, and food preferences.
2. Lots of options: Naturopathic doctors use a variety of natural therapies to support weight loss, such as nutritional counseling, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and hydrotherapy. These therapies are safe, non-invasive, and can be tailored to your specific needs. For example, if you have a sluggish metabolism, I can recommend herbs that optimize metabolism and improve digestion. If you have chronic stress, there are many relaxation techniques to be explored or adaptogenic herbs that support the adrenal glands, for example.
3. Lifestyle changes: Weight loss is not just about calories in and calories out. It’s also about making sustainable lifestyle changes that support overall health and well-being over the long run so the weight does not creep back up. I can help you identify areas where you can make positive changes, such as improving sleep hygiene, reducing stress, increasing physical activity, and practicing mindful eating. These changes can not only help you lose weight but also improve your overall health and prevent chronic disease.
In summary, if you’re stuck in your weight loss journey, a holistic approach may be what you need.
